Roberta Metsola was elected President of the European Parliament in January 2022.
She was first elected to the European Parliament in 2013, becoming one of Malta's first female Members of the European Parliament. Metsola was re-elected in 2014 and then again in 2019.
In 2020 she was elected as the First Vice-President of the European Parliament, becoming the first Maltese national to hold the post. She was responsible for the European Parliament's relations with national parliaments and for the Parliament's participation in the interreligious and non-confessional dialogue (Article 17 TFEU).
Within the European Parliament, President Metsola was the EPP Group's Coordinator in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, between January 2017 and 2020. President Metsola was the Parliament's rapporteur on the European Border and Coastguard Regulation in 2019. She also co-authored the Parliament's own-initiative report on the need to protect journalists in the European Union from Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation.
Professionally she is a lawyer who has specialised in European law and politics.
Prior to her election as a MEP, President Metsola served within the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union and later as the legal advisor to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. In her student years, she campaigned actively for Malta's EU membership, and was active in various organisations, acting as the Secretary-General for the European Democrat Student organisation between 2002-2003.
She completed an Erasmus exchange in France and graduated from the University of Malta and the College of Europe in Bruges.
Born in 1979, Roberta Metsola is married to Ukko Metsola and is the mother of four boys.

President of ENEMO since May 2022, engaged in election monitoring as part of the Center for the Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID) team for almost two decades. During this period, she has managed a variety of projects related to democracy, local administrations monitoring and human rights. Moreover, for the past 18 years, has coordinated all CeSID's EOMs- related activities in the region and also been part of international monitoring missions on 21 occasions in Ukraine, Moldova, Hungary, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, Albania, Georgia, North Macedonia and Kosovo, with the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations (ENEMO) and ODIHR/OSCE. Throughout her involvement in election observation, she has covered a wide range of positions, from a short-term observer to Deputy Head of Mission and acting Head of the Mission.

Federica Mogherini is the Rector of the College of Europe (since September 2020) and Director of the Pilot Programme of the European Diplomatic Academy, implemented by the College of Europe (since August 2022). Previously, she has served as the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission (2014-19).
Prior to joining the EU, she was Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (2014), and a Member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies (2008-14). In her parliamentary capacity, she was Head of the Italian Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and Vice-President of its Political Committee (2013-14); member of the Italian Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (2008-13); Secretary of the Defence Committee (2008-13); and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. She also coordinated the Inter-Parliamentary Group for Development Cooperation. She has co-chaired the United Nations High-Level Panel on Internal Displacement from January 2020 to September 2021.
Federica Mogherini is a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group and of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Fellow of the German Marshall Fund, member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Institute for Foreign Affairs (IAI) and member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. She was a member of the High Level Reflection Group of the Council of Europe. She has a degree in Political Science from the University of Rome "La Sapienza".
She was born in Rome in 1973, lives in Belgium and has two daughters.
